about

Upon visiting the Kumari Palace in Kathmandu, Nepal in the 1990's I saw in the distance a very young girl, perhaps she was ten years old, who people were worshipping as the living Kumari goddess.

She reminded me of my daughter Sabrina who was the same age and for some reason I felt a great sadness for her which inspired this song.

lyrics

Nepali legend through the years says Goddess Kumari will appear living in the body of a young Newari girl

To every village teams are sent to find where the Kumari went, Sita's parents proud and sure their daughter would endure

And now the local kids are calling, can Sita come to play, her parents shake their heads, Sita's gone away, Sita's gone away, the Kumari lives today

And in the village square the people cheer and celebrate, welcome the living Goddess Kumari lives today

Sita was a little girl when taken to a strange new world of marble floors and walls of stone, the family lives alone

They dress her up in sacred clothes, paint her face like days of old, she leaves the temple once a year, the King and crowds appear

And now the tourists watch as the villagers kneel and pray to a little girl - Sita's gone away, the Kumari lives today

At the end of hear eleventh year, Goddess Kumari will disappear, Sita goes back to her home, to live her life alone

And so it was, and so it is, so few have lived a life like this and once again new teams are sent, to find where the Kumari went.
